The amount of money a breach could cause a company does not matter. Even if it doesn't cost the company anything, no one wants their private information to be in the hands of strangers. Regardless of the potential financial cost, security is no longer an option in the business environment or at home for personal use.
It's amazing to me how many people that most people do not realize that update notifications are many times security patches. I have known several people to tell me that they ignore it when Microsoft Windows informs them of available updates for downloading. It is very likely that the company has noticed or experienced software vulnerability and now needs to alert all other users of a "fix".
When we think about, people are continuously creating harmful software or searching for new ways to hack into someone's computer. No one solution will be a complete solution for all time. There will always be a need to combat some new attack on computer systems.
