The agricultural revolution was the first upheaval to transform European society from a feudal to a capitalist social system, during the early eighteenth century. Under the feudal system, land ownership was established through hereditary rights which tied labourers to the land on which their ancestors had worked. The introduction of capitalism, however, saw these rights revoked and the peasants forced off the land on which they had worked and lived for generations.
