I think that government oversight of public programs and activities has definitely increased in the past 20 years. I think that the topics have gotten more personal and there are more topics period to address.
I think overall, government oversight of public health has been positive. I come to the conclusion with one agency in mind and that is the CDC.
"The CDC works with partners at the local, state and national level to monitor and prevent disease outbreaks (including bioterrorism), implement disease prevention strategies and maintain national health statistics.
The agency also leads public health efforts to prevent and control infectious and chronic diseases, injuries, workplace hazards, disabilities and environmental health threats" (Rouse, 2017).
Without the CDC, we would not have been able to monitor the Ebola outbreak or the Zika outbreak and taken precautionary measures to further it's spread. We would not have known the effects of both viruses without their monitoring. We would have not known what to do if their was an outbreak without their education.
It is due to their diligence, that two potentially devastating viruses were pretty well contained, even though they had the potential to be devastating to our population.
