tempering is a heat treatment method for metals

Tempering is a heat treatment method for metals and alloys. In steels, tempering is completed to "toughen" the metal by transforming brittle marten site into bainite or a combination of ferrite and cementite. Precipitation hardening alloys, like most of the grades of aluminum and super alloys, are tempered to precipitate intermetallic particles which strengthen the metal.
