Symptoms of hypothyroidism that women may experience

Problem:

I selected thyroid disease because it is extremely prevalent in women compared to men and can greatly affect your overall health when not treated properly. Thyroid diseases are broken down into two categories which include hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism and symptoms of both can mimic other diseases. Symptoms of hypothyroidism that women may experience include fatigue, weight gain, constipation, intolerance to cold temperatures, dry skin, hair loss, depression, and slow thinking. Symptoms that women with hyperthyroidism may experience include weight loss, heat intolerance, anxiety, palpitations, tremors, sweating, and insomnia (Wilson et al., 2021). Measurement of serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is the initial diagnostic screening test recommended for patients suspected of having thyroid disease. If TSH is abnormal, then a free thyroxine (free T4) level would be drawn to further assess severity and determine if the patient has hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. If autoimmune thyroid disease is suspected, then additional labs can be drawn to check thyroid peroxidase antibodies (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists [ACOG], 2020). Treatment for hypothyroidism includes thyroid hormone replacement with levothyroxine. The dose can be adjusted according to follow up TSH levels. It is important to instruct patients to take the medicine on an empty stomach as well. Need Assignment Help?
