Kara and Meg, a middle-aged lesbian couple, present with intimacy issues. Kara is Native American descent. Meg is Caucasian. Kara recently found out that Meg has been seeing another woman for the past 6 months. Meg defends her behavior by blaming Kara for being distant and unavailable. Kara begins to cry as she discloses a recent memory of being sexually abused by her father, a cold and unavailable man. She describes Meg as being much like her father, "cold and selfish" which results in flashbacks and recoiling from Meg's touch. She wishes that Meg could be more sensitive and compassionate.

Sara is a 65-year-old African American woman that you have been seeing for 2 months. Her husband of 40 years died 3 months ago. Her son and daughter in law and 3 grandchildren reside in another state. She rarely sees them. Her daughter and son-in-law and 2 grandchildren live local, but she says they are too busy to spend time with her. Sara has a strong religious affiliation and has many friends in the church who call her daily to offer help and support. While she appreciates this, she often lets the calls go to voicemail and does not return them. Sara longs for her husband, her best friend and life partner. Without him, she sees no reason to live. Her children and grandchildren don't seem to need her. She admits to thinking about the gun her husband has hidden somewhere, but that even if she could find it, she would never take her own life due to her religious beliefs and desire to be with her husband again someday.
