Peptic Ulcer:
Summary:
Peptic ulcers refers to the sore that develop on the inside lining of stomach, esophagus, and the upper portion of small intestine. Many types of peptic ulcers exist namely gastric, esophageal, and duodenal. Gastric attacks the stomach while esophageal occur inside the esophagus. On the other hand, duodenal ulcer attacks the inside of the upper portion of small intestine known as duodenum. The medical professionals dispel the myth that spicy foods or stress causes peptic ulcers. Instead, the professionals argue that bacterial infection and some medications cause peptic ulcers. The common symptom of the disease is a burning pain. The ulcers and stomach acid that spills on affected area aggravate the pain. Other symptoms of peptic ulcers encompass appetite changes, nausea, vomiting of blood, unexplained weight loss, and dark blood in the stools (Mayo Clinic Staff 1).
Typically, the patients suffering from peptic ulcers feel pain anywhere at the region between the navel and breastbone. Consequently, the pain becomes worse when stomach is empty. The temporary relief of the disease includes consumption of foods that buffer stomach acid, and taking drugs, which reduce accumulation of acids and relieves gnawing pain (Mayo Clinic Staff 1). However, this method relieves the ulcers for a short time. Thus, it is advisable for the patients suffering from peptic ulcers to seek medical attention whenever the signs persists and get to alarming levels.
Peptic ulcers occur when acid in the digestive tract destroys the lining of inner surfaces of stomach, esophagus, and small intestine. The eating away of the surface creates a painful sore that may lead to bleeding. The common causes encompass helicobacter pylori bacteria lead to inflammation of inner layer of the stomach. Although not clear, the transmission methods of the bacteria encompass kissing, food and water. The use of certain drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and ketoprofen irritate and inflame the lining of small intestine and stomach. The adults who taken the aforementioned painkillers frequently are at a high risk of developing peptic ulcers. Other medications that can lead to ulcers comprise of bisphosphonates such as Actonel and Fosamax, as well as potassium supplements (Mayo Clinic Staff 1).
There are risk factors that expose one to peptic ulcers. The factors include smoking and drinking of alcohol. Smoking increases the risk of contracting peptic ulcers in the people who are infected with Helicobacter pylori bacteria. Similarly, alcohol can cause irritation and erosion of the mucous lining of stomach. Thus, alcohol raises the amount of acids in the stomach Mayo Clinic Staff 1). The test for the Helicobacter pylori includes use of blood, breath, and stool. Similarly, the health care professionals can use endoscopy and X-ray to detect the presence of peptic ulcers. Consequently, the treatment of the peptic ulcers can employ antibiotic medication to kill Helicobacter pyroli, as well as medication to stop the product of acid and promote healing process. The acid blockers include omeprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole, esomeprazole, and pentoprazole. The acid blockers reduce the amount of acid released to the digestive tract. However, the long-term use of proton pump inhibitors increases the risk of spine, hip, and wrist fracture. Alternatively, patients can employ lifestyle remedies such as healthy diet, stress management, and avoidance of smoking and alcohol (Mayo Clinic Staff 1). In addition, people should embrace preventive measures such as protection from infections and taking painkillers medication with meals.
Incident with peptic ulcer:
I have a firsthand experience with peptic ulcers. One of my relatives suffered the agonizing pain and discomfort of the peptic ulcers for about three years in a remote area. In fact, no single medicine from the family doctor that seemed to alleviate the daily discomfort and pain endured for three years. At last, the relative sought medical advice from a local after a long writhing with pain. The sympathetic nurse dressed him in blue uniform and gives him some general treatment. The doctors examined him and ordered a battery of tests that included several x-rays and blood drawings. Six hours later the physicians told the relative that he had stomach ulcers. Consequently, the doctors released him with sincere suggestion to see a personal doctor for comprehensive treatment.
The comprehensive treatment of stomach ulcers involved eradication therapy. The personal doctor told my relative to take a combination of two or three antibiotics and proton pump inhibitor at the same time, and the doctor advised that taking one antibiotic alone was not sufficient to kill the germ. So he was taking each antibiotic twice a day for a period of two weeks. Furthermore, the doctor pointed out that the proton pump inhibitors blocked proton pumps responsible for partial production of stomach acids. The prevention of any further damage to stomach ulcers allowed natural healing. My relative was keen on taking the drugs according to doctors’ prescription. After the completion of the prescribed dose, the stomach ulcers cleared and my relative resumed his normal life.
