Suggested material and diameter for the shaft the material

624_Design the system.jpg

Design the system show above (shaft, bearings, gears, key at gear) for a FoS of no less than 2.  You may assume that the shaft has a single diameter of d1 (constant cross section of diameter d1 shown above).  The power transmitted is 2.25 HP and comes from an electric motor.  The power is transmitted into the system from gear 2 at 1725 rpm and does not vary with time.  The tangential velocity of the belt must be 1626 inches per second.  A V-belt has tension on both sides, and the ratio between the force F1 on the tight side and F2 on the "slack" side is usually assumed to be about 5.  You must use helical cut gears.  Do not assume that the pressure angle must be 20 degrees just because it is in the drawing.  Given that the output is a belt we can use a course gear mesh.  Assume solid gears.  The center-center distance between the shafts holding Gear 1 and Gear 2 must be less than 18".

Specifically, you will need to provide a

  • Suggested material and diameter for the shaft. The material must be a shaft-specific steel.
  • All variables required to purchase both gears: d, Pd, N, F, φ, ψ, etc.
  • Bearings to support the shaft (part number from Fig 11-23)
  • Key to fix Gear 1 to the shaft.
