Structural discrimination-the unequal opportunity race

Discussion Problem: Unequal Opportunity Race

Imagine you have been asked to participate in a race, but when you arrive on the day of the competition, you realize that the conditions of the race are not equal for each contestant. What can be done to remedy these unfair conditions to even the playing field for everyone? For this week's Discussion Spark, you are asked to consider this example as a metaphor for racial inequality.

To prepare for this Spark: Watch the short animation, Unequal Opportunity Race, in this week's Learning Resources, which illustrates some reasons for racial inequalities.

Post an explanation of your thoughts about the inequality issues raised in the video. How do you think these issues can be resolved?

TEXT: Structural Discrimination: The Unequal Opportunity Race

Animation begins with an overhead view of track and field stadium with crowds of people in bleachers.

AUDIO: CROWD CHEERING

Overhead view zooms into starting line on track with four runners in position for a start of a race. The four runners include a black woman, a black man, a white woman, and a white man.

A close-up of a gun is seen being raised point up to signal the start of the race.

AUDIO: GUN FIRE

The gun is fired to signal the start of the race.

The two white runners begin racing down the track in their individual lanes.

Two traffic signals emerge from the ground in front of the black runners blocking their individual lanes. The traffic signals each lower a yellow and black gate preventing the two black runners from moving forward. The two traffic signals flash red lights.

A time clock in the background begins with the number "1492." This number increases representing years that African Americans were prevented from moving forward. When the time clock displays "1528," the word "Slavery" in white text emerges from one of the red lights of the traffic signal and in front of the two black runners. Other words begin appearing faster from the flashing red light including "Broken Treaties," "Genocide," "Manifest Destiny," "Trail of Tears," "Dred Scott," "Segregation," "Chinese Exclusion Act," "Japanese Interment" and "White Only Naturalization".

In the background, the two white runners are seen running on the track.

The time clock displays the year "1605" and continues to steadily increase.

When the time clock reaches the year "1615," two batons appear in the lanes of the white runners. When the time clock reaches the year "1629," the two white runners each grab the baton in their running lane as they run past the two black runners, who are still waiting to begin the race.

At "1640" on the time clock, the animation follows the white male running on the track. While the time clock numbers continue to increase, the white male appears to be getting older and his baton, which has a dollar sign emblem, is starting to grow larger. The baton grows larger that it requires the now older white male runner to carry it with two hands.

The older white male runner passes a younger version of himself with the time clock revealing "1693." The baton is passed from the older white male runner to the younger white male runner with the time clock displaying "1715." With the time clock at "1726," the younger white male runner catches the baton and then runs past the older version of himself.

At "1750" on the time clock, the younger white male runner again appears to get older again and his baton, which has the dollar sign emblem, continues to get larger where it requires him to hold it with two hands. With the time clock at "1789," the older white male runner passes a younger version of himself. The very large baton is again passed from the older white runner to the younger white runner.

When the time clock reaches "1866," the two black runners are still seen waiting to start the race. They are also visibly angry. When the time clock reveals "1897," both white runners carrying large batons with dollar emblems are seen smiling while passing the black runners. The black runners are still waiting to start the race and are blocked by the two traffic signals with flashing red lights.

When the time clock reveals "1908," the white runners slow down and we hear a female voice say "bye-bye." The words "Wealth Disparities" appears in white text. When the time clock reveals "1964," the two traffic signals flash green lights and the yellow and black gates preventing the two black runners from moving forward rise up. The two black runners are allowed to begin the race.

The animation follows all four runners racing down the track in their individual lanes. The two white runners are leading the two black runners. Storm clouds appear and move over the two black runners.

AUDIO: THUNDERSTORM

Lightening and rain is seen over and falling on the heads of the black female and black male runners. The two white runners proceed without incident. The word Discrimination" appears in white text.

The cloud disappears and the runners are all running alongside each other again. The two black runners then jump over and are tripped by a variety of rocks in their racing lanes. The words "Poor Schooling" appear in white text. The black female runner continues past the black male runner as he works to pick himself up from his fall. After passing the black male runner, the female black runner falls into a hole in her racing lane. The black male runner initially continues past the hole in the ground, but then returns to help the black female runner.

From inside the hole, the black female runner reaches up for the black male runner's hand to be lifted out of the hole in the ground. The word "Underemployment" appears in white text.

As soon as black female runner is out of the hole, she continues the race going past the black male runner who has an expression of shock on his face.

The black male runner catches up and passes the black female runner but then he falls into a shark-infested pool. The black female runner stops just short of the pool. The black male runner pulls himself out of the shark-infested pool while the black female runner stands at the pool's edge with a look of sock on her face. The words "Standardized Tests" appear in white text.

The black runners continue to race in their individual lanes on the track. A cage of metal bars falls down into the lane of the black female runner forcing her to bump into it and fall down. The metal cage then rises into the air as the black male runner returns to black female to help.

Other cages start falling from the sky near the two black runners. To avoid the falling cages, the black male runner stumbles backwards and lands on his back. A metal cage falls on top of the black male runner enclosing him inside. He is then lifted up into the sky inside the metal cage.

The black female runner tries to help reaching upward toward the cage with the black male runner enclosed. Other cages with other people are seen float upward into the sky. The words "School to Prison Pipeline" appear in white text.

Alone, the black female runner continues the race and then stops when a "Rest Area" sign appears which points away from the track.

AUDIO: HEAVY BREATHING

Appearing tired, the black female runner observes a suburban neighborhood with homes and tree-lined driveways with cars.

AUIDO: HEAVY METAL GATE CLOSING

A large metal gate is seen closing preventing the female black runner from entering the suburban neighborhood. The words "Housing Segregation" appear in white text. The black female runner is then seen continuing the race.

AUDIO: POLICE SIREN

The black female runner is stopped by what appears to be an official standing in her lane holding a drug testing specimen cup, a clipboard, and an identification badge. The black female runner has an expression of anger. The words "Racial Profiling" appear in white text.

The black female runner is then seen continuing the race. She stops again because of a brick wall blocking her individual lane. A sign on the brick wall reads "Dead End." Appearing exhausted, the black runner sits down on the track with her back leaning against the wall and looking upset. The words "Shortened Lifespan" appear in white text.

AUDIO: CONSTRUCTION NOISE

With the black female runner sitting on the track and leaning against the brick wall, construction workers are seen build a moving walkway. The word "Connections" appears in white text.

The male white runner is seen riding the moving walkway past holding a towel over his shoulder in one hand, a water bottle that appears to say "Yale" in the other hand, and wearing sunglasses. The word "Privilege" appears in white text.

The animation follows the white male runner as he stands on the moving walkway passing the female black runner. He then passes the black male runner enclosed in a cage. The word "Wealth" appears in white text. The while male runner continues to ride the moving walkway and then passes the white female runner, who is still running on the track. The words "Old Boy Network" appear in white text.

Smiling, the white male runner takes a sip from his water bottle and then crosses the finish line ahead of the while female runner. Photographs appear shaded to appear like old images of highlights from the race.

AUDIO: TRACTOR ENGINE

The animation ends when a colorful bulldozer shoving the photographs off to the side. The bulldozer and its operator appear on the track where the black female runner sits observing the developments.
