Strain theory discusses several responses we have when we experience the "strain" of life: Conformity, Ritualism, Retreatism, Rebellion, and Innovation. These are our ways of adapting to life as we experience it. Conformity is when you accept that you will reach your goals in life by working hard and earning them. For example, if we want a bigger house, a newer car, or a great vacation, we need to work hard to earn the money to obtain these dreams. When we can't earn the money that we need to reach these goals is when we will revert to the other responses. In a diverse world, we can expand our thoughts and actions, but there are rules and regulations within a society that people must follow. What happens if rules and goals conflict with each other?
