Assignment task: Spheres of Life Theory Application
Directions: For each of the following situations, state whether they are examples of a person acting within the Aesthetic, the Ethical or the Religious Sphere of Life.
1. Your professor somehow got your paper mixed up with someone else's. You received an A+, while your actual paper received a D. When thinking about whether to accept the A+ or not, you reflect carefully about the heartache and trouble the other person will have as a result. Because of this, you decide to tell the professor that the D paper is actually yours.
2. When a promotion opens up at work where you are the manager, you find that two employees are both equally qualified. One of them is your best friend. The other is a single mom who really needs the extra money to care for her kids. Rather than think about what makes one of them a better candidate than the other, you choose to give the job to whomever shows up first and trust that it will work out.
3. Your neighbor has been putting garbage in your garbage can for a while. On the night before garbage is picked up, you discover that your can is full so that you can't add any more to it. You pick through it and put all of the garbage that came from your neighbor on their front porch to show them you won't put up with it.
4. After a friend goes out of their way to help you move to a new house, you want to show how thankful you are. Instead of simply taking it for granted that friends should just help without receiving a reward or going overboard in celebrating them, you decide to just give them a gift certificate to their favorite fast food chain.
5. The person who has bullied you your whole life is stranded on the side of the road after their car has broken down. It's late at night and raining. You know the chances of them getting help are very slim because they've always been so mean to everyone. You remember what you heard in church just a few days before about the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you." You pull over and offer them a ride.
