Read the following scenarios and answer the questions in detail.

Scenario 1 - Chris is a 5 year old boy who attends the local day care centre. Chris has a good relationship with both the staff and his peers. Chris is usually well behaved at the centre and likes to participate in most centre activities.  After the last school holidays, Chris returned to the centre a changed child, he has become aggressive and picks fights with his peers. He has become aggressive towards the male staff member and fathers bringing their children to the centre and has started swearing. Chris has become a loner. He has started wearing jumpers and long pants even on warmer days and refuses to get changed when he shows signs of being overheated.  When encouraged to take of his jumper Chris says that he has been told he is not allowed to take it off.  After further discussion and insistence due to the fact that he is overheating he agrees to take it off revealing a mass of red welts and recent scarring. Chris says, "Dad told me not to take off my jumper, will I get into trouble now?  I don't want him to hurt me again."

1. List the indicators of risk described in the scenario.

2. Outline the steps you would take in response to the situation at the time of this incident.  Include the things you would say and the things you would do with Chris.

3. What policies would you refer to do decide your course of action?

4. Complete the MRG tool for this scenario.  Use the appropriate decision tree to determine your course of action.  Include a copy of the MRG report your submission.  Identify who you would notify, and when. 

5. What do you need to record? Where would you store these records?

Scenario 2 - Soraya is the mother of Jamila, a 3 year old girl who attends your service. Soraya arrives to drop Jamila off very distressed.  She says her partner Aban has been very depressed and won't seek help.  He has been explosive and unpredictable lately often getting annoyed with her.  He became agitated when Soraya was putting Jamila in the car, accusing Soraya of wanting to leave him.  He pushed Soraya to the ground and kicked her a number of times.  Finally Soraya was able to get away and drove straight to the centre.  She says she hopes Jamila couldn't see from the car where she was strapped in her car seat.  As you talk to Soraya, you notice that Jamila is clinging to her mother's leg.  She is crying quietly.

Assignment 2 -

Complete the following scenario by answering. Your answer should consider workplace health and safety policies and procedures.

You and your fellow work colleagues meet regularly for staff meetings. During the meeting issues have arisen in relation to WHS issues that have occurred in the work place. These include:

a) One of the chairs in the office has a broken leg on which someone has placed a pile of magazines on top, to stop someone sitting on it.

b) The electrical cords at the entertainment area are unravelled and are on the floor across the pathway to the block corner.

 c) The path from the front gate to the classroom has raised pavers after the last lot of heavy rain. Isla tripped and fell the other day, however there has been no recording.

d) The centre is changing documentation of child observations over to digital recording systems e.g. iPad. Mary a mature aged colleague appears anxious with this news.

With your knowledge of safe workplace procedures, discuss with your fellow colleagues the potential risks for the above issues. What suggestions, strategies and ideas could you offer to your fellow colleagues to implement and eliminate potential dangers?
