The mean, median and mode are all ways of representing the "average" from a group of data. The mean is simply the arithmetic average we learned to use to figure out our grades on our spelling tests in 4th grade. The median is the middle number when the data is arranged from smallest to largest or vice versa. The mode is the number which occurs most often. For today's post please find a group of data and find these 3 "averages." For example. Data: {10, 15, 8, 10, 7, 8, 10} First I'll rearrange: {7, 8, 8, 10, 10, 10, 15} Mean = sum of numbers divided by count = (7 + 8 + 8 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 15) ÷ 7 = 68 ÷ 7 ≈ 9.714 which we'll round to 9.7 and I'll post about rounding later today Therefore, the mean is 9.7 Median = middle number when data is arranged in order 7, 8, 8, 10, 10, 10, 15 there are three numbers to the left of the 10 which isn't underlined and there are three numbers to the right. Thus, the median is 10. Mode: is the number which occurs most. There are three 10s. there are two 8s. Hence, the mode is 10. If you have large groups of data you'll need to use technology to find these. So, for this post you may want to find small groups in MSL or in the text or online.
