Smartphones today have changed our ability to find, use and provide information with minimal difficulty, however, in the past ten years, smartphones have changed from single user oriented to multi user connectivity. For example, in our last class time, a student pointed out that there smartphone can change 3G waves into Wi-Fi waves so that other devices like his tablet could have access to the internet by creating his own wireless hotspot. I still remember having my flip phone while other students were getting their technology fix by having the latest iPhone or Blackberry smartphone. As the years rolled onward, technology progressed to fix bugs or features that customers demanded, such as the convenience of using your smartphone data plan and transfer data information to be used for Wi-Fi purposes. Not only did the software in the smartphones become more user friendly, but the designs became less bulky and fat, to slimmer and wide. For instance, I have an iPhone 3GS and it is a smartphone in the sense that I have access to the internet, play games and use various mobile applications but when compared to the new Blackberry, Windows Phone or IPhone, the hardware inside my iPhone is outdated, its smaller, bulky and fatter than the new smartphones out on the market and Apple has stopped developing software updates for my iPhone because of its technological age.

Smartphones have changed the way I access information. When I had my flip phone, I couldn't access the internet because it didn't have the feature built into the phone, but presently, every phone has the same core key features to its purpose, which are calling, texting, data connection and Wi-Fi accessibility. Phone companies may change the design of their product, the hardware and software configuration but our smartphone devices for at least the next ten to fifteen years will consist of those key features. The reason why I give that time duration is because even I have started to use my data connection to make phone calls and text, so SMS and calling minutes may become redundant in the future if all you need is good data connection. Moreover, I can do anything with my smartphone that I can do with my laptop, the only differences is that I still like the feel of keys pressing against my fingers and it will be hard for me to change my technological skills as the years progress. Overall smartphones have evolved to be easier to use and access information than ever before and as technology advances, the hardware inside those smartphones will perform better and become more efficient. In that case, the software will have to be developed for ease of use for the young and old alike, therefore, there wouldn't be sudden changes but key features like calling and texting will slowly be weaned out.

Our lives as a society is better for having smartphones but it all comes down to how an individual uses the device to access and use specific information. Personally, I think it's a shame that the overall urban populations spend the majority of their lives looking from screen to screen. I never understood how that need to constantly check your phone every minute made any sense, but since I got a smartphone, I do that now too which is the main reason why I regret having a smartphone and how it lessons my quality of life, however, it makes information easily accessible and keeps me connected with people on multiple levels, through features like calling, texting and various mobile applications that use a data connection of some type. There are various studies published online that relate technology and the harm it affects to your body but in order to improve devices and technology, there needs to be mistakes in the product. Therefore, I believe our lives as a society is better because of smartphones but if people use smartphones as a tool and not control their lives then I think technology can progress faster. There is more to my life than looking at my smartphone all day.
