Introduction

Senior healthcare management leaders must be efficient and effective in managing organizations that are constantly prone to change. Changes in the industry and their impacts are many: senior management modifications, industry regulation changes, providers leaving the organization, community demographic shifts, and socio-economic challenges, just to name a few. Through it all, senior healthcare leaders must also be comfortable determining the most efficient organizational structure and appropriate chains of command to support the organization through constant change.

This week's assignment applies organizational structure concepts to the healthcare industry and more specifically, into various hospital settings.

Activity Instructions

Design an organizational chart that depicts the entire management structure of several different healthcare organizations with all identified departments for each of the following types of hospitals:

  • Small rural hospital with less than 25 inpatient beds and required inpatient and outpatient service lines to maintain "critical access" status
  • Large urban hospital with over 400 inpatient beds with full outpatient and outreach service lines

Each organizational chart should be on its own page. You should also write a 1-2 page summary for each chart that explains the structure and the vertical and horizontal integration of the management chain of command.

Writing Requirements (APA format)

  • 4-5 pages (2 pages for organizational charts and 2-4 pages for the summaries with approx. 300 words per page), not including title page or references page
