After watch the film *Baby Face ( 1933) and *The Fountainhead* (1949),then answer the two questions.

1. Would Howard Roark approve of Lily Powers in Baby Face using other people to get ahead, and her ambition to make herself the master of others?

2. Skyscrapers are celebrated in The Fountainhead and virtually purged of negative associations with the economic failures of the 1930s Depression. At the same time, skyscrapers might also be said to be an ideal embodiment of Rand's philosophy, which can be divined from the film. What about skyscrapers so perfectly expresses Rand's philosophy?

Case: Steve McQueen`s 12 years a slave employs numerous instances of mis-en-scene throughout its running to portray the torture and helplessness of the slaves in context. For instance, McQueen used cinematography and mis-en-scene to present a naturalistic frame that represented simplicity and oppression for the slaves. The colossal farm houses designed to suit the masters` preferences were a common feature in any farm, with an establishing shot of the large farm, with green plantations and slaves working on the farms. The camera`s point of view is then swiftly directed towards the master`s palace, big enough to fit the entire slaves but ironically full of empty spaces and unused utilities to indicate the perception of the slaves and their position to the white man. Mis-en-scene is also observable throughout the movie in plantations which create a farm like ancient feeling for the viewer, creating an understanding to the viewers of the prevailing conditions back then. The green farms represent the pre-modernization era, whereby everything beautiful was meant to be green although the slaves were in dirty clothes representing an irony in the livelihood of the slaves who tended to the plantations.
