Preliminary Questions
1. Give the relationship between a wave's velocity, frequency, and wavelength. Show that this equation is dimensionally correct. Note that a graph of lambda vs. L/f should be a straight line. What are its slope and y-intercept?
2. Sketch the waves (using the method outlined in the Physical Principles section) corresponding to the lowest three frequencities of vibration of the 30 cm air column shown below. What is the wavelength of the standing wave in each case? If the speed of sound in air is 331 m/s, what frequency is heard from each pipe?
