Single or one-dimensional construct

Some of the researchers argue that a human's sense of self is not a single or one-dimensional construct but instead that people maintain possible or multiple selves. Possible selves are mental images which people have of themselves based on the past experiences, future expectations and present functioning. According to some, these possible selves are not just hopes or goals although rather unique products of individual experiences and meaning which convey an individual's sense of agency. In addition, possible selves are understood to be distinct from, however in relation to, overall self-concept.
