My name is Lasse. I am a sophomore majoring in Sport Management with a minor in Psychology. I also play lacrosse here at SNHU. I am originally from Frankfurt, Germany, and this is my first sociology class. I have not taken any sociology courses before, but I am very interested in understanding how people behave both as individuals and in groups. Topics like inequality, culture, identity, and social systems are interesting to me, especially because they influence how opportunities and experiences can be very different for different people.
For this discussion, I thought about the former U.S. president Barack Obama and how his life might have been different if he had lived about 100 years ago, around the 1920s. Today, Obama is known as the first Black president of the United States and became an important political figure through elections, media coverage, and public attention. Using the idea of sociological imagination, it becomes clear that many of these opportunities would have been very different if he had lived in that earlier time period.
If Obama had lived around the 1920s, his life would probably have been very different. At that time, racial discrimination in the United States was still very strong. Laws like Jim Crow laws separated Black and white people and limited opportunities for Black Americans in education, jobs, and politics. Because of this, it would have been almost impossible for a Black man to become president during that time.
This example shows how much historical context matters. Obama's success is not only about him as a person but also about social changes over time, especially through movements like the Civil Rights Movement. Need Assignment Help?
