Show on a to-scale drawing both the front and rear

Q1. What are the three basic classifications of clay and how do their Atterberg Limits help us to determine their impact on foundations and fill performance?

Q2. What are the general compaction variables for granular soil discussed in class?

Q3. A client wishes to build a motorcycle sales building on a slope and wishes to have as much curb exposure as possible. You are the civil engineer doing the site grading and drainage plan and the client does not want to pay for the services of a geotechnical specialist. Assume the cut and fill balances. The building is to be constructed at the location and elevations as shown on Figure 4 on a 4H:1V slope or 25%. Assume the native material is SILT (ML). Perform the following:

a. Show on a to-scale drawing both the front and rear cross-sections of the grading with retaining walls if required.

b. Determine the void ratio and porosity of the native and compacted silt. Show calculations. Plot and check on Figure 5.

c. Do you have any concerns with in in-place density of the silt with respect to structural reliability? If so, explain.

d. How much water, in gallons, needs to be added to each cubic yard of fill soil to meet optimum moisture?

e. Describe the limitations and material that you would use for compaction behind retaining walls if used. Include lift thickness, soil, and compaction equipment.

f. Describe the method on how you would compact the fill for the site. You may want to use a sketch for this answer. Show the sequential fill placement along with loose lift thickness. What type of compaction equipment would you use? Would you recommend compacting the soil at the optimum moisture content or just below or above? Explain you answer.

g. Due to a bad design for site drainage, the entire soil column becomes saturated and perches 1 ft. deep of groundwater on an impermeable caliche layer. The caliche layer is at an elevation of -S ft. Describe the changes in hydrostatic stress in the soil and the impact on stability.

h. The client has a source of 1 ft. minus basalt rock available for the driveway to access the site. How would you specify compaction to ensure the fill is stable?

Please provide calculation step by step with explanation and graph if it is asked?
