Should university be free for all Canadians?
I think university tuition should be free for all Canadian students. The tuitions fees have steadily been rising and students and their families are frequently worrying about paying it off. Students in each kind of program are paying a minimum of $20 000 to get their university education. One or two university degrees used to be equivalent to one high school diploma in the past. We are required to be more knowledgeable and that takes time and money. It is like a tax payment that cannot be ignored. David Macdonald, senior economist with the left-leaning Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, explains that since there has been an increase in student admission, the government will soon have to fund the students. This has already been seen with high school and it is the most likely future for university students. Free tuition would mean that more people can go to university and those who are less fortunate do not have to worry about paying high fees. Next, paying off the loan can be especially difficult and not everyone is making $100 000 when they come out of university so, it can take a very long time. This means that graduates have to pay off their loan and cannot save money for future investments such as a car or home. If tuition was free, the students would be able to save money for their investments and start a new life. Lastly, Canada is one of the richest countries in the world, so it reasonable to ask that Canada add a small tax fee to go towards students' tuition. A claim saying that Canada cannot afford to pay for all the students, when it can spend billions of dollars on Armed Force and war items, will not go unnoticed. Needless to say, it is a topic that needs to be addressed right away and students have gone on protest before, because they have a right to. Why is the government not helping students gain the degrees they dreamed of attaining? Where is the fairness that all students should get the opportunity to study at university, without having to worry about financial concerns? When can we, students, go to university and not worry about having to pay it off when we get our diplomas?
