Should there be a keynote speaker or a panel discussion

Assignment Task:

Learning outcomes:

  • Apply a set of strategies to create short pieces of organized, coherent, clear, and concise writing with an understanding of one's audience and purpose.
  • Apply critical reading strategies to improve comprehension of text.
  • Apply basic understanding of critical thinking strategies to engage with a topic.

Case Scenario:

The Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts (CHCA) and the George Brown College Foundation (a registered charity that raises funds for the college) have teamed up to host a student and industry networking event in December. CHCA and the Foundation have formed an event planning committee to execute this event. The committee has defined the purpose of the event:

  • to give students the opportunity to learn from and network with industry leaders
  • to provide hospitality heroes the opportunity to meet future hospitality leaders (that's you!)

While this is not explicitly a fundraising event, the Foundation also wants to use this event as an opportunity to strengthen its working relationship with CHCA, develop its understanding of students (for whom they raise funds for scholarships), and solidify its partnerships with the hospitality industry.

The event planning committee, which is being led by Cindy Gouveia, has asked COMM1000 students to provide thought leadership around what this networking event should look like so that the goal of the event is achieved. For example:

1. Should there be a keynote speaker or a panel discussion? If so, who should be the speakers? What will they speak about? Why?

2. Should there be an interactive, hands-on component to the event? If so, what should it be? A workshop, demonstration, or something else? Why?

3. How will students and industry leaders network organically? Remember the purpose of the event.

Instructions:

Write a professional 500-word email to Cindy Gouveia who is head of the event planning committee. In your email, focus on proposing what the networking event should look like and why. Your goal is to convince the committee to execute your vision so be specific, descriptive, and persuasive.
