Should be fighting wars to help keep our allies free

Problem

I. Summarize the factors in the fall of the USSR mentioned in the Fall of the USSR reading Fall of the USSR reading-including what Reagan did, as well as broader factors that were happening, regardless of who the US President was in the 1980s.

II. During the 1960s, the US became involved in a long conflict in Vietnam, in which we sent over 500,000 troops, and lost just over 50,000 of them, in a failed attempt to prop up the regime of South Vietnam. On the other hand, after staying out of the fighting in the 1930s while our allies were being attacked, during World War II, the size of our armed forces grew to 12,000,000 by 1945, with some 400,000 killed--in a very successful attempt to eliminate two evil empires, those of Nazi Germany & Imperial Japan.

Do you think we as a nation, should be fighting wars to help keep our allies free? Or should we commit to only fighting in our own defense of our own territory?
