Should all fifty states use the Merit Plan?
The merit plan, something also known as the Missouri Plan, is a system that has been put into place to keep state court judges appointed. With the merit plan a governor appoints a judge for the state from a list of acceptable candidates. This judge will serve for a year, after this year is complete the voters will vote whether this judge should keep its place in office.
In 1946, Missouri was the first state to use the Missouri Plan, or the merit plan. The plan was initially thought up by Americas twenty-sixth president, Theodore Roosevelt. Over the years this plan has been updated to fit the changing needs of the country.
According to the Missouri Governor website, Missouri prefers this plan because it allows their people to have a positive effect on their states' management. This same website also says this plan gives the state the more flexibility to offer the job to qualified candidates in their talented job pool.
After reading the few articles and text book sections about the merit plan it made me wonder, should all fifty states use this plan? This plan allows flexibility and openness for the people to have a better say on their states official office.
