Among the short-term effects of combat trauma on survivors are intrusive memories nightmares insomnia generalized anxiety depression and avoidance of anything that might trigger war-related memories. Survivors also report irritability anger, and emotional numbing. In the long term, survivors may develop PTSD which can significantly affect their quality of life as they often live with feelings of guilt for having survived when others did not. These feelings of guilt are common among war survivors and can lead to suicidal thoughts and even suicide attempts. Many survivors cope with these emotions by using alcohol, drugs, or other addictive substances. This behavior can result in long-term health complications and negatively affect their overall quality of life. This creates social problems, with detrimental effects on the survivors their family, friends and coworkers. Often emotional distance and avoidance isolate the survivor making recovery more difficult. Survivors frequently become consumed by anger and impulsiveness which can result in domestic violence verbal abuse and legal problems. Combat trauma differs from civilian trauma in that the survivor repeatedly witnessed death which significantly increases the likelihood of developing PTSD and intensifies its symptoms over time and across deployments.
