We can not abandon email where I work in LA county hospital there I saw managers and their team work through instant messenger to pass on message I don't know why we need face to face communication because this messenger overcomes the distance and saves the time so increasing efficiency of work. But not everything can not be done through messenger but it is a vital part at least in USC hospitals.
We can add one daily meeting it can be during lunch hour or at end of shift to increase the face to face communication. In short I prefer more faster and efficient way of communication if I am the manager and that is through internet.
