Share a current event article with the class that relates

Share a current event article with the class that relates to the concepts covered in this week's reading. Write a brief summary, and explain why you felt the article was relevant.

For these assignments, your task is to find an article that was written in the last year about a specific concept.

One thing that is important in such a task is using the right type of source. When looking for articles, you should concentrate on business periodicals and avoid opinion sites, personal blogs, and web-page entries (like company websites).

What's an "opinion site?" The Huffington Post is an example of an opinion-based site. This source should be avoided for academic research.

Sometimes I see references from sources like Linkedin in assignments and discussions. Linkedin is not a valid site for academic work because anyone can post to Linkedin and plagarized work has been found on this site. You must be selective when it comes to academic research.

There are many sites on the Internet that are nothing more than places for individuals to upload information. Slideshare, Linkedin, and other such sites should never be used for academic research. A true business periodical has a reputation and individual writers who have some expertise.

Their work goes through an editing and review process. Not so for social media. Other sites, like the HuffingtonPost, are opinion sites. You may enjoy reading these popular sites, but they're generally not used for academic research.

For any academic research, using good sources is important. So you should concentrate on reputable business periodicals like the following:

•BusinessWeek

•Society for HR Management (SHRM)

•Inc.

•The Wall Street Journal

•Forbes

•Fortune

•Entrepreneur

•Harvard Business Review

•MIT Management Sloan Review

There are other sites, of course, but these are the major periodicals and journals in business. If using Strayer's Resource Center, there are many professional journals that meet the standard for academic research.

One thing, though, steer clear of company websites. These types of "articles" are obviously biased and are not in keeping with the intention of this assignment.

Add a summary of the article without copying and pasting (put it in your own words). Discuss why this article relates to the reading and the overall topic (assigned reading).

Finally, when you add a summary to a discussion, remember to add a link for the article you're discussing. Make sure it is a full URL (the web address) so that the reader can click it and go right to the article if needed.
