Sexual harassment and/ or gender based violent crimes

Problem: Respond in 100 words to this post be engaging

Hello everyone my name is Sevanna Panico (she/her) and I am originally from Northern New Jersey but I currently live in Virginia. I love learning about new topics, specifically ones relating to mental processes in children. As someone who wants to become a BCBA, understanding the way their mental process works is essential. Additionally I love to read and read all different genres but I find myself focusing on psychological novels. I look forward to getting to know you all better and learning more about gender and the way it impacts our society!

I would like to focus on the fourth wave of feminism for this discussion board. The fourth wave of feminism is the wave we are currently in, according to some the beginning of this movement dates back to 2008 (Ryle,2023). The fourth wave of feminism brings more inclusion than past waves as it focuses and is characterized by queerness, trans inclusivity, and body positivity (Ryle,2023). With each new wave though comes backlash that will be received. For the fourth wave specifically one of the most notable events was the overturn of Roe vs. Wade which took away access to many of the reproductive rights women had previously (Ryle,2023). To give a specific example, the overturn added strict guidelines on abortions in certain states.

If I was an adult woman at the beginning of the fourth wave movement I imagine life feeling more empowering as I would feel more comfortable pursuing different leadership roles I had not thought were possible in previous waves. As we get later into this wave I believe I would begin feeling more open to discussing harassment if I was faced with it in the workplace as the #MeToo movement began being prominent in social media in 2018 (Ryle,2023).  Although I believe life would be more empowering and accepting of everyone there are also drawbacks such as facing conical drawbacks due to the fact that I am a woman even though I am in the same or a similar role as male colleagues.

My primary concern during the beginning of the movement would be sexual harassment and/ or gender based violent crimes. This is because the MeToo movement didn't begin until midway through the fourth wave meaning that the discrimination and chance of violence are still quite high and a major concern. Additionally the right for equal opportunities for equal pay is still a major concern. The wave of feminism would help me during this time though by allowing women a safe space to fight back against discrimination and harassment through the beginning of the MeToo movement. Essentially this movement allowed speaking out against abusers to be normalized which allows me to feel more confident speaking up if it occurred to me.

Through the movement though fewer changes were being made to the legal system which means even if I did speak out the legal process would take far too long for me to feel fully comfortable because I would be scared of possible backlash I would receive and fear of another instance occurring. I believe the best way my concerns would have been better addressed would be by having a strong workplace protection that would ensure the legal systems take these cases seriously and ensure the right repercussions will be served to those who have harassed others.
