Sexual freedom and Ogburn's Social Change

a. Describe the social change you have selected.

The social change I chose is the freedom to explore sexuality in its various forms without being condemned by society for my choice. For most of American history, sexuality has been a subject that has been approached with respect and care. Traditionally, rules for engaging in sexuality included first and foremost being in a marriage relationship. Though we all understand that sex was sought by some outside of marriage, we are equally aware that if caught, those engaged in adultery or extra-marital sex would be condemned by society. Think for example of Hawthorne's famous novel The Scarlet Letter. The sexual revolution of the 1960's challenged this mentality and posited the idea that freedom of sexual experimentation and expression was not only normal, it was also a healthy and desirable trait.
