The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the class’s understanding of advertising as it relates to important issues and controversies in media and/or society. Your goal is to be critical of advertising rather than merely explaining why an ad, campaign, or marketing strategy did or did not work. What can we learn Be skeptical. Raise questions instead of searching for answers. Which ads or campaigns got people upset or talking? Which ads or campaigns should get people upset or talking? The debate in which you offer your position is up to you.

The debate you chose is central to this assignment so pick something that interests you. Some examples include: Cause marketing campaigns—breast cancer, ice bucket challenge, NFL and pink. How Dr. Martens boots began as comfortable footwear, were then appropriated by punk subcultures, and then later by preppy style. The Dark Night’s “Why So Serious?” marketing campaign?which promoted the film using viral videos, treasure hunts integrated with cell-phone GPS?turned fans into free marketing labor. Nike made a strategic decision to move the swoosh logo to the neck of its major league baseball clothing so that the company’s logo would be on display under the Majestic brand jerseys worn by all players during televised games. Are negative attack ads effective, and if so, why are some candidates vowing not to use any negative attack ads during their campaigns? Do some advertisements unjustly represent minorities, genders, or sexual orientations? What role does advertising play in encouraging our materialistic values? Etc.

Of course this list could go on. What is important to remember is that you are being asked to critically analyze one debate in advertising and make an argument about its relation to media and/or society. Do not simply summarize or give the history of an advertising campaign, strategy, or technique. How does advertising articulate or make salient this debate for the larger public?

Requirements:

• What is the debate? By the end of the first page you should show your reader that there is a debate about the subject you are going to discuss. What is at stake? Why is this important?

• Your argument, in relation to the debate, should be clear within the first page (yes, you need a thesis statement). In addition, your first page should outline the main points of your paper. These main points will serve as the structure for the body of your paper. Your main points should be easy to identify in your paper’s body.

• Grammar and the overall structure of your content will factor into your grade. Transitions between paragraphs, topic sentences, and meeting the word requirements are enforced.

• You must cite at least five credible sources that relate directly to your argument. These sources do not have to agree with your argument. Rather, they will facilitate the direction of your argument.
