Several students started meeting on Friday nights at a nearby pizza parlor. It was fun to unwind and share work and family stories, and discuss their courses and the state’s winning sports team. They started referring to the group as the Pizza Club. While the meetings were informal, and the number of students who showed up on any given Friday would vary, there was a core group that seldom missed a week. One of the members, Greg, came semi-regularly. Sometimes he and his wife would get a babysitter so they could have a night out without kids. One week the group was informed that Greg had been in a serious accident. As weeks progressed, various members of the Pizza Club would take turns visiting him at the hospital. Eventually he was moved to a rehabilitation center. The Pizza Club would occasionally take a pizza to the center and spend the evening with Greg and his wife. One week when the Pizza Club arrived for their visit, Greg’s wife was upset. She said that that Greg was going to have to leave the center because his insurance would no longer cover his treatment at the rehabilitation center. She detailed Greg’s daily therapy routine, the challenges of transporting him to the doctor, and even just moving him from room to room. She pointed out that he really could not be left alone for long periods. Without consulting the other members, Jane said, “The Pizza Club will help!” The next week she called all the members and they met to discuss what they could do. Another member, Alex, was a project manager, so he began to chart the ways that each person could help. Within a short time, they had six members who had agreed to learn how to do the required therapy. Three men who lived close by volunteered to be on call and would help with some of Greg’s personal needs. One man donated a wheelchair that had belonged to his father. Others volunteered to help with the trips to the doctor. They even had members who volunteered to take care of Greg’s two kids and help with shopping. Within a few hours, the plan was completed. They then took a pizza over to Greg and his wife to celebrate his homecoming and to share their plan. Some of the members could not or did not choose to participate, and they seemed to come less often to the Friday Pizza Club. However, the people helping with Greg attended more regularly than ever. In time, Greg fully recovered and became one of the most regular attendees. He often organized birthday or anniversary celebrations for other members of the club.'
