Topic :Over the course of this semester, we have traced the role of empire, slavery, capitalism, and democracy in shaping colonial North American and U.S. history between 1492 and 1877. For your final paper, I would like you to:
• Select one of these topics, define it historically, and describe 4-5 major events, developments, or ideas associated with it;
• Make a case for why the topic discussed above played a more important role in colonial North American and United States history than any of the other options, and;
• Explain how the topic discussed above continues to influence the present.
Each of these topics should be the subject of at least one paragraph. Your response to each point of the prompt should address WHYyou think and feel the way you do. And your position on each of these points should be clearly and concisely reflected in your introductory paragraph.
The following is a sample outline of the midterm paper. Please note:
- This is not the only way to approach this paper. In fact, I strongly encourage students to attempt more adventurous approaches to the task at hand.
- Students should avoid adopting the specific language of this outline. I will be happy should you choose to adopt this as a model, but I do not want to see papers that parrot the language of this outline back to me directly.
