Anatomy and Physiology I Lecture BIO 2513

Investigation of Disease Process Involving a Disease Covered in the Course

Course Goal (Student Learning Outcome): By the end of the course the student will be able to explain and discuss the disease processes associated with a specific system(s) via Powerpoint presentation.

Purpose: The student will research a specific disease associated with a structure or process that is studied in A&P I. The student will research the disease in terms of its cause(s), metabolic pathways, symptoms, genetic influences, diagnostic methods, morbidity, treatment, and range of distribution.

Assessment: Student will be assessed using a rubric which models the institutional competencies.

1. Select a disease and submit the topic to your instructor by due date (see module 5).

2. Research the disease. You must have a minimum of four sources, in addition to the textbook. These sources can include medical journals, legitimate websites, and/or an expert.

Your instructor will give further explanation of the required research sources if you have concerns. In your research, you should determine the following:

a. Causes(s)

b. Metabolic pathways, organelles, organs, and/or organ systems involved

c. Symptoms

d. Genetic influence, where applicable

e. Diagnostic methods

f. Morbidity (frequency, NOT death rate)

g. Treatment

h. Range of distribution (gender, ethnicity, geographical breakdown, etc)

3. Create a Powerpoint presentation containing the above information in a minimum of 8-10 slides. Include images and graphs where appropriate.

4. The last slide must include all references used to complete the assignment.

5. Refer to the attached rubric to insure that you have fulfilled all research, communication, presentation, and application requirements.

6. Submit your completed Powerpoint presentation to your instructor via the assignment link (module 8).
