Sej446 - engineering project to investigate the effect of

Engineering Project

Need time frequency, FFT, FRF and a model thesis in which Matlab plotting can be seen.

This project report shows the effect of cross section on the acoustic properties of steel pipes by using Non-Destructive Test (NDT). This study is important as the steel pipes represent as the crucial infrastructure. For example, it is used for movement of oil, gas, and water. The general idea of this experimental project is to study and analyse the result by using NDT on steel pipes with a different diameters and thickness and testing all the pipes with  boundary of  three different conditions. The effect of cross section based on NDT for each pipe is to investigate and compare between the three different conditions which are:  first test with no-boundary (empty water), half-filled of water and last experimental test a fully filled of water. The aim of this project is to study the effect of these conditions as well as the behaviour through an acoustic property for both pipes with a different diameters and thicknesses. The behaviours and results of doing the NDT on pipes are usually used for engineering safety inspection. The method was used in this project is to do an acoustic property through NDT method, the impact reverberation, and selected due to its efficiency and easiness of use, excitation of the wave is made by an impact hammer and received the guided propagation to distribute along the pipe by using three accelerometers (transformers). The results show the impact echo system which is a possible choice to detect any damage in steel pipes and comparing the effects in a different case of diameter and thickness.

Project Aim and Objective -

This project researched and studied the problem of pipes health and abilities by using NDT acoustic properties of steel pipe following the echo principles impact. It studied the different cases of cross section with different conditions of boundary. As there are a limited researches of impact echo methods on pipes comparing with NDT methods such as guided waves. Most of studies focused on for example, corrosion, weld types or different types of pipes cuts. In this experiment will aim and  simulator  to replicate a more practical scenario. Therefore, the experimental study will need to use three different ceases to test the pipes which are, without any boundary conditions, half of the pipe will be filed with water, and last cease will be with a fully filled of water. After doing this three cases by using NDT on steel pipe. The results and outcomes will be ablating to camper between each ceases and studying the changes when using different diameter and different thickness of steel pipes. The project objectives are summarized as:

  • To investigate the effect of diameter on the vibration property of steel pipes in different conditions.
  • Understanding the effect of change in natural and mode shapes of steel pipes for different diameter.
  • Analysing the data of cross section conditions on guided propagation through steel pipe for Non-Destructive Test (NDT).
  • Understanding the effect of cross section on the acoustic proportion of steel pipes, explaining the outcomes and comparing with another different diameter.
