They depress the activity of CNS.
Reduce excitement, give feeling of calm.
Higher doses induces sleep.
Sleep inducing drugs are also called sleeping pills or hypnotics.
(a) Barbiturates -
Synthetic drugs drived from barbituric acid.
Withdrawal causes symptoms of epilepsy.
Repeated use leads to barbiturism involving skin eruption accompanied by chill, fever & headache.
They are lethal to body if taken with alcohal can lead to death.
(b) Benzodiazepines -
These are antianxiety as well as sedative drugs.
