Library and Internet Research Learning Exercise
Review the following note-taking examples that demonstrate one way to take notes when reading an article for a research paper, speech, or presentation. This method can be utilized for the sources you have been locating for your research paper by dividing a sheet of notebook paper vertically, with the main ideas on the left, and the paraphrased information on the right. Be sure to list the source at the top of the two columns to ensure proper documentation within the text of the paper.
These examples demonstrate how the reader selected the main points of the paragraph that was provided, and paraphrased them. The final example demonstrates how the reader integrated the main points from two different sources into a single paragraph for his/her research paper.
Read the following two selections. Note five main ideas in each article, then re-write the main ideasusing your own words, following the examples attached.
Write a paragraph integrating information from both sources, incorporating the main ideas written in your own words. Be sure to include the source in text (in the sentence and/or in parenthesis as in the example).
