Step 1:
1. Review the Paper 2 Argument Instructions and Guidelines file and choose a topic. Number each of your responses below.
2. In the textbox, state your topic (Ex. Regulations for Social Media)
3. State the specific position or stance you have chosen for your topic (ex., More stringent policies should be passed for user-age verification and appropriate use on social media platforms.)
4. Explain why you have chosen your topic. Remember, do not use the first-person point of view. (ex. Censorship is a significant issue. Many children have been endangered due to inappropriate content on TikTok and other social media platforms. This could have been prevented if better protocols were in place to prohibit minors from viewing all content.)
5. Provide two to three reasons why you have chosen your position (ex. More stringent regulations for age verification and the content allowed on social media platforms will decrease instances of minors accessing inappropriate content (1), curb the dissemination of misinformation (2), and limit the number of bot/fake accounts (3).)
6. Review the ENG 111 Introductions and Conclusions guide. Using the information from Steps 2-5, write a draft of your introduction for Paper 2: Argument. Your introduction should include a hook to engage the reader, necessary background or context, and a clear thesis statement presenting your stance and main reasons. (ex. Social media has become an essential part of daily life for millions of people, shaping how we communicate, share information, and build communities. However, the rapid growth of these platforms has also created an environment where minors can easily access harmful content, misinformation spreads at alarming rates, and fake accounts influence public opinion. More stringent policies should be passed for user-age verification and appropriate use on social media platforms. Stronger regulations will decrease instances of minors accessing inappropriate content, curb the dissemination of misinformation, and limit the number of bot or fake accounts.)
Step 2:
In a reply to two peers, RESPECTFULLY provide two opposing viewpoints to their stance. Consider what reasoning should cause them to reconsider their position. You may use disagreebot (website) resource to help you form opposing viewpoints. Also, include a reputable source to support each viewpoint and explain how that source supports your view.
(ex. Opposing point 1: More regulations on social media content will deny users creative liberties and freedom of speech.
Source 1: The article below by Julie Horrowtiz includes information on the First Amendment protections for freedom of speech and freedom of the press without government interference. Highlighting these protections supports the idea that the government should have limited authority to intervene in social media content and publishing.
