We were given three options to choose from. Since I don't deal in cyber crime but its becoming more prevalent due to the interconnectedness of the world I decided to give my take on the subject.
Intelligence analysis is governed by executive order 12333, this helps guide the power between the 17 intelligence community agencies. The role of an intelligence analysis can range from cyber-crimes to counter-terrorism. The first known use of using intelligence analysis dates back to when George Washington was the president and established the intelligence community in 1982. Since the internet became a hit in the 90's it has opened up the doors for cyber-crimes, also known as crime without a face. It can effect anybody, anywhere, any country.
As put by Goyal and Goyal, "It is really difficult to confine the cyber threat in its initial stage as enormous varieties of cyber threats are developing day by day, making it hard to understand their behavior at an early phase" (Goyal 2017). It can consist of child porn, data hacking and distribution of the material that is obtained. Being an analyst puts a big strain on someone because if you mess up then people can die. You have to make sure that everything you are proposing in a mission is legitimate information.
The intelligence analysis community needs to continue to meet the ever changing threats against our country. Some of the issues that can affect how intelligence is spread among the communities can be intelligence gaps, bias opinions not based on facts, lack of communication between the different fields and distorted information being shared. If there is a set standard across the intelligence community then it could eliminate some of the issues (Bruce 2015). Since the cyber world is continuously evolving there is usually a delay in the advancement of fighting a cyber-crime. It can be fought off by artificial intelligence so that it can identify where the attack is coming from. It can also set up a great defense system like McAfee and Norton.
With intelligence analysis broadening its involvement in fighting cyber-crimes it will help identify the flaws in our system. You would be able to identify how terrorist are using cyber-crimes against us and see how we can shut them down. We use counterterrorism to help try to mitigate an attack or catch spies within our community. Cyber-crimes is a global threat and will continue to evolve in the next 3-5 years. If there is a standard set among the different intelligence communities then it could possibly help eliminate cyber-crimes all together. In the intelligence community we have an entire job and section dedicated to hacking communications and cyber warfare. This helps try and mitigate any attacks against our country. There are over a million different attacks a day trying to hack into secure networks, just to show the magnitude of how big cyber-crimes are.
