Political scientists are interested in examining one of the great puzzles of American democracy: the avowed support for representative government but low levels of political participation among eligible citizens. Compared to other wealthy democracies, political participation in the US is anemic. Additionally, there is a growing perception that government at all levels of society responds exclusively to the interests of the rich and well connected. Such a perception can contribute to public resentment and cynicism, thereby further discouraging political participation.
