Please respond without the use of AI or previously submitted questions / responses. For your original post, select two examples of racism in sport and analyze them using concepts from this week's lesson. In your response, consider how we might best address these issues in future. Use this as reference and also provide a response to this post in addition to your own. Two examples of racism in sports from the lesson are that Latino athletes faced racism. Lighter-skinned athletes could pass as white, while darker-skinned players were excluded to separate leagues (Dowler, 2026). This reflects the concept of white supremacy in the past in sports. This is becuase the leagues were structured around if someone was white, not on talent (Dowler, 2026). An example from the lesson that relates to this topic is institutionalized racism (Dowler, 2026). This type of racism refers to differential access to goods and services by race, according to the lesson (Dowler, 2026). Therefore, this idea relates to Latinos ' experience in the MLB becuase in both cases a certain group is excluded based on race (Dowler, 2026). In this case, the darker-skinned Latinos were segregated to a separate league (Dowler, 2026). Another example that relates to racism in sports is through Native Americans being forced into residential schools in order to assimilate into white culture (Dowler, 2026). The goal was to erase differences that made them Native (Dowler, 2026). Sports too were used to civilize Natives into White culture (Dowler, 2026). They were unfortunately forced into sports in a white culture standard instead of doing it their own way (Dowler, 2026). However, sports did give some individuals a sense of recognition and opportunity, which was key during this hard time. Therefore, this example also relates to institutionalized racism. This is becuase there were differences in access to opportunities by race (Dowler, 2026). Natives were forced to be stripped of their identity, while other races did not have this issue (Dowler, 2026). To fix these issues in the future, there should be no diffeecne of treatment based on one's skin colour. Everyone should get equal opportunities to be on each team. It should be based on talent, not skin colour. Next, there must be education on the negative effects of having racist beliefs. This will help prevent normalizing systemic racism in sports and help bring light to the awful topic. Lastly, Native Americans' beliefs and cultures must be respected. They may have a different way of playing sports, and that is okay. It must be normalized to respect other cultures and not try to assimilate everyone into white culture. All in all, if these steps are implemented, racism in sports will decrease. Dowler, K. (2026). Deviance and Crime in Sport. Need Assignment Help?
