Review the video urban myth - the pacific trash dump

Discussion Question

Instructions

You just finished learning about oceans and currents. I have decided to have this video discussion on something some people consider an Urban Myth - The Pacific Trash Dump. This is a region in the ocean where large amounts of plastic particles will converge. These particles do not make a land mass but rather create a super-saturated region that essentially affects the ecosystem and life in the ocean. Everything from hardhats and buckets to microscopic particles are trapped floating in suspension throughout the water column in this 'vortex'.

The following three videos give both a more in depth explanation of the situation and a short, environmental brief summing up the problem and cause.

Neither video offers a substantial 'fix' for the situation so your assignment is to:

- Watch the videos and post your comments on what you thought about it. What did you find most interesting about the videos?
-Do you think this is an actual problem that should be addressed?

-Then offer some sort of possible solution, or if you do not think there is one, explain.

Be specific and remember this is designed to be a class discussion so you should be reading fellow student posts and commenting on them as well. Posts should be a minimum of 120 words, answering all the questions posed in a well thought out manner and contain proper grammar and spelling for full credit.

ALWAYS remember your 'netiquette' and be polite! Don't forget this class is designed to teach you that EVERYONE has different opinions and what one person or culture believes is right another may not.
