Assignment:
Purpose: The purpose of assignment is for students to explore segments of the Hospitality Industry in terms of current events, career opportunities, key corporate players, technological advancements and sustainability efforts. Students will present their findings to the class at the end of the term. Upon completion of this assignment, students will have a detailed understanding of the major segments of the hospitality industry
Instructions: Once you have been assigned a segment of the industry, your objectives for this project are as follows:
• Identify at least three of the current industry trends within your segment.
• Review at least three management career opportunities within your segment. Try to find salary guidelines for positions.
• Identify and familiarize yourself with the industry "key players". Choose one company to highlight and create a company profile for the company selected.
• Present the major technological advancements being made within your segment to remain competitive, enhance service, and improve productivity.
• Determine what changes are being made across the segment in response to sustainability efforts. How are the key players responding to those efforts?
Current Industry Trends:
• Current trends must be selected from a 2014 industry or newspaper publication.
• The article(s) must apply specifically to your assigned industry and must be an "event" (i.e. trend, development or challenge) taking place at that current moment or something that is foreseeable in the near future.
Career Opportunities:
• An extensive review of career opportunities can be done by using newspaper publication, various career search engines (i.e. Monster,Career Builder etc.) or specific company websites.
• Specific websites will be discussed in class to assist you in gathering this information. For salary information - general salary guidelines can be found at www.salary.com, www.glassdoor.com, or www.bls.gov. Be sure to gather the following information for each career opportunity:
• Specific titles, location and job type (full-time, part-time, seasonal)
• Details about the job description / position summary
• Requirements of the position / principle duties
• Qualifications
o Education
o Years of experience
o Certifications / Specializations
Industry Key Players:
• Present the major "key players" within your segment. Key industry players are corporations such as: Marriott, Hyatt, Red Lobster, Olive Garden (just to name a few!!). A long list of key players will also be discussed in class which will help you identify corporations within your segment. Once you have completed your list, select one industry corporation and gather the following information:
• Company Overview
• History of the corporation
• Headquarters
• Number of locations / types of locations
• Number of employees
• Financial Information
o Annual Sales
o Stock Price
o Plans for growth and expansion
Technological Advancements:
• Identify and list the common technological advances being made across the segment.
Sustainability Efforts:
• Identify and list the sustainability efforts being made across the segment.
Requirements: On the due date, students will present their findings to the class using a PowerPoint (or some other type of presentation program such as Prezi) presentation. Please divide the presentation into the following sections:
• Current industry trends
• Career opportunities
• List of the segment key players
• The highlighted company chosen
o Incorporate property photos or links to specific websites
• Technological advances
• Sustainability efforts
Each group will have approximately20 minutes for their presentation and questions.
