Movie Clip: Blue Valentine- The Hospital Fight Scene

In the movie, Blue Valentine, there is a hospital fight scene that shows the broken foundation of Dean and Cindy's marriage. The scene encapsulates the unstable dynamics of their resentment, absence of trust, and communication style. In the scene, Dean, the husband, gets really upset after finding out that Cindy is in close relation with her supervisor, who has been sending her emails. Cindy has not shown to be unfaithful, but Dean is convinced that the supervisor is a serious threat to his marriage with Cindy. Dean shows feelings and expressions consistent with the characteristics of betrayal and jealousy. This is present because Dean feels as if Cindy is pulling away from him emotionally.

The situation at the hospital escalates quickly because Dean and Cindy do not display successful communication. Due to his anger and frustration, Dean punches the supervisor in the face rather than communicating why he feels what he feels. Cindy feels uneasy and embarrassed by the fact that Dean just punched her boss in the face. The married couple continue to yell and argue with each other instead of calmly addressing the conflict with meaningful thought and consideration. Their emotions are running very high and that is exemplified by their anger, lack of communication, and their avoidance of the actual issue. They are causing a push and pull reaction that makes it hard for a couple to reconnect and solve their issues.

I chose this scene specifically because I thought it was the perfect example for reactive jealousy and suspicious jealousy that we learned about in the slides. I thought that Dean's reaction was consistent with reactive jealousy because he could perceive the relationship between his wife and her supervisor as a reasonable threat to their marriage since the supervisor has been emailing her privately. On the other hand, I could see it being suspicious jealousy because Cindy poses no evidence of being dishonest or unfaithful to Dean. Dean's outburst could just stem from the lack of stability with wife, and having assumptions to blame that instability one may be easier for him instead of taking accountability for their weakened connection. Additionally, this scene highlights how unresolved conflict and avoidance can increase the occurrence of jealousy and mistrust.

I would have handled the situation differently. If I was ever uneasy about my partner's status/relationship with another person, I would hope to have open communication that fostered honesty and respect. It is always better to cool down and calm your emotions before having a difficult conversation. No conflict will ever get solved when it is handled with anger; resentment will only bloom from that. Although I understand Dean's feelings, that is not a justification for his actions. Need Assignment Help?

One movie that shows betrayal, jealousy, and forgiveness is The Notebook. In the movie, Allie is engaged to Lon, but after seeing Noah again, she realizes she still has feelings for him. She spends time with Noah without telling Lon, which is a form of emotional infidelity because she develops a romantic connection with someone else while still committed to her fiancé. Noah also feels jealous because he believes Allie has moved on with someone else, while Lon is hurt when he discovers she has been seeing Noah.

The characters handle the situation in different ways. Noah and Allie eventually have an honest conversation about their feelings, while Lon responds with sadness rather than revenge. Although he is upset, he accepts Allie's decision when she admits she is still in love with Noah. This shows that open communication, even when it is painful, is healthier than continuing the relationship based on dishonesty.

This example connects to the concept of reactive jealousy because Noah's jealousy is based on a real situation-Allie is engaged to another man. It also relates to the lecture on motivations for infidelity, since Allie's emotional connection with Noah happened because she still had unresolved feelings from their previous relationship. Her actions were not simply about seeking excitement but about realizing she was with the wrong person.

I do not think I would have handled the situation the same way. I believe that if I realized I had strong feelings for someone else, I would end my current relationship before pursuing another one. It would still be difficult and painful, but I think being honest from the beginning would be more respectful to everyone involved and would avoid causing unnecessary hurt.
