Review article that addresses themes of nursing ethics

Assignment task:

There are six "themes" of Nursing Ethics talked about in Chapter 6. They are:

Caring: Caring is a core value that undergirds nursing ethics.

Expertise: Because society allows professionals a monopoly over the services they provide, ethics demands that those services must be provided with expertise.

Autonomy: Because it is self-regulating, the profession of nursing can be said to be autonomous. There are legal and ethical imperatives for individual nurses to practice autonomously. Autonomy does not mean full and absolute control over every aspect of practice.

Accountability: Grounded in the moral principle of fidelity, accountability refers to being answerable to someone for something one has done. Mechanisms of accountability include, but are not restricted to, codes of nursing ethics, standards of nursing practice, nurse practice acts, and nursing theory and practice derived from nursing research.

Authority: Authority for nurses to practice is granted through the legal processes of society.

Unity: Nursing unity relates to the profession's ability to organize for the purpose of fulfilling the promises made to society.
