According to the article Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been proven to reduce recidivism. Cognitive behavioral therapy is used as an umbrella for many other therapies. Under the CBT umbrella there is behavioral therapy in which the therapist focuses on the patient's behavior rather than their mental state. CBT programs are being offer in corrections are to reduce recidivism, the two main programs are Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT) and Reasoning and Rehabilitation (R & R). The MRT goals to enhance social, moral and behavioral deficits a offender may have. The R & R is to enhance self-control, cognitive style, interpersonal problem solving, social perspective, taking, critical reasoning and values. This program teaches the offender to think before acting and that they are able to understand that there will consequences for their behavior.
