Their title would suggest that their expertise is contained only within the realm of language. While many of their functions is to help develop language skills and correct deficiencies, SLPs are able to help diagnose and treat a number of conditions. They are able to help post stroke patients re-learn how to chew, swallow, and speak. Without these wonderful people, simple tasks like eating or drinking could be difficult beyond measure (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2016).

Speaking of food, dietitians play a role in the improvement of patient outcomes just as much as nursing or speech language pathology. Dietitians are charged with ensure that patients with special dietary needs are provided all that they need. These patients could be the post bariatric patient who needs to learn about their new eating plan, a patient who has recently been diagnosed with diabetes type 2 and needs to learn how to change their diet/count carbohydrates, or the bulimia sufferer who needs counseling on eating to maintain a healthy weight. Regardless of the diagnosis or need, dietitians play an often unseen or unappreciated role in ensuring that patients are provided with optimal nutrition necessary to help them recovery from their individual illnesses (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 2017).
