Food is the one great unifier between cultures. No matter where in the world you come from, there's nothing like sitting down to a good meal with friends & strangers to celebrate culinary art. That's why I've chosen the anime Restaurant To Another World as my topic for this discussion.
To briefly describe this anime: it's about a western-style restaurant in Tokyo that houses a mystical door that opens to different worlds once a week, which allows many fantastical creatures and beastmen to enter and eat gourmet foods and forge relationships.
One perspective I'd like to touch on is that of the cook, known only as The Master. He doesn't discriminate who comes through his door, whether they be human, beast, or the like. He only wishes to provide a good meal to those who need it and offer a comforting atmosphere in his restaurant.
Another perspective is the character Aletta. She is a representation of the homeless and lower-income communities. She stumbles into the restaurant, hungry and alone, and begs for forgiveness after being caught sleeping on the floor. Instead of being reprimanded or cast away, she's offered food and warmth in exchange for working part-time at the restaurant. This, unfortunately, doesn't happen as much as we'd like to in the real world, but seeing it in an anime about creating food and friendship can be a step towards treating those communities with more respect.
To summarize, Restaurant To Another World is about creating bonds and relationships through food. As I said in the beginning, food is a great way to connect with those of different backgrounds and cultures.
