The prisoners in 2023 went from 1,230,100 in 2022 to 1,254, 200 in 2023. This was an increase of approximately 24,100 or 2%. The number of females increased as well as males from 38 states. It has also been determined that those incarcerated in the FBOP decreased while state incarceration increased by 2%. At the state level jurisdiction there was an increase of about 26,800 from the year prior. I believe this is due to mass incarceration and "diminishing return." Not every criminal is the same, and different levels of crime exist. So incarcerated individuals should be treated differently from each other. According to the text, "diminishing returns" in prison policy occurs when many people of widely varying risk levels are all treated equally (Gau, J. M. 2019, p. 124). This in fact has a severely adverse effect on prisoners, including contributing to an increase in crime behind bars. Ironically, studies have proven mass incarceration contributes to increasing crime waves, where there would have been no increase or a very small margin of increase in crime.
