Research theories which argue in favor of freedom of speech or press as communicated in the First Amendment. Three of these theories are addressed in your text: marketplace theory, self-government (Meiklejohnian) theory, and individual freedom (self-realization or fulfillment) theory. Other theories include absolutist theory, ad hoc balancing theory, preferred position balancing theory, and access theory.
