Research the practice of one contemporary artist

Making Connections:

In this assessment, you will research the practice of one contemporary artist, active from 1970 to the present day. In your research and writing, you are required to analyse their work through a particular theme or idea that you see as being active in their practice.

In choosing a theme, you can choose one we have discussed in class, or you can choose your own. In analysing your chosen artist’s work and making your argument, you must select two or three key examples of their work. Please present high quality images of each artwork in your essay.

Your essay should include the basic biographical information of your artists and give some thought to the context in which they are working. For example, you may want to include details on where their work is produced and displayed, its audience, and/or how it has been critically received. You may also want to consider the traditions that have informed their work.

You must include a bibliography that contains at least five art publications that cover a variety of different media, including books, magazines, journals and web sources.

You should consult both the library and the Internet for your research. On the second floor of the library, there is a vast selection of art-related books, in the 700s range. You should also take advantage of the excellent art-related e-resources, which can be accessed on or off the campus. In particular, see Oxford Art Online and Art Full Text.

Please note, you should not cite Wikipedia as a source for your research, as this is not considered to be a scholarly resource.
The assessment for this course is 1 x 1,500 word essay.
